Building a model train layout is not a thing to joke about. Though creating a model rail road is an excited hobby but it also takes many pains. There are many problems faced by rail road modelers’ right from planning the layout till buying the model train stuff. Few troubles related to model train stuff can easily be solved with the help of research. Moreover, merely planning and buying does not make the layout a success.

After proper planning, and acquiring the train stuff required, it is also necessary to place all the things in an appropriate place. Sometimes the model creators are themselves confused what to do and what to avoid. The best advice given by veteran rail road modelers is to study a lot before starting.

If your budget is low and do not have enough money to buy books and expensive stuff for model train layout, I am sure eBooks are best alternate. The tips and recommendations presented in the eBooks are a way to most successful model rail road. Best way to start is to note down the things that you should have and those you would like to have.

One may face following problems while building model train layout:

Model Scenery: One of the vital problems faced by many model railroaders is deciding the terrain. You need to know the total space available for preparing the layout. Many hobbyists get confused and plan the terrains which are much larger than the space available. Moreover, if you decide to create tunnels, bridges etc you need to be extremely careful in their size and stuff used to prepare.

Track Plan: Another problem that puzzles the modeler is, planning the train track. First of all, choose which type of train you want to run on your tracks. Once you are thorough with the track plan you need to design the same. Before putting all the model train materials, you need to test the track. One can decide straight track, small tracks, curvy tracks etc based upon their locomotives.

Determine Scales: The scales are another important thing that matters a lot while making rail road model. One can choose between different scales such as HO scale, N scale, O scale, Z scale etc. Determining the scale means finding the ratio of size of model tracks to the real one. The most commonly used scales are HO scale and N scale. The scale decision plays a very crucial role in preparing model train layout.

Different locomotives: After fixing the scales, now is the time to choose the locomotives one wants to run on the model train tracks. Small wagon, carriage and the like vehicles can be used if the tracks are curvy and pass through valleys or tunnels, while large or super fast trains can be made run all through the straight track. The giant trains are well observed on straight paths.

The above mentioned difficulties are normally faced by the model railroaders. However, These complexities do not shun a hobbyist from performing his thrilled hobby.

Difficulties are a part of life, learning to face them leads you to the way of success. So confront the obstacle and become a model railroader!!

Every person is born creative. Some just do not come up with their art because of the lack of opportunity. Creating a model train layout along with extraordinary model train stuff is an exciting hobby. The most crucial aspect while constructing model rail road is its track planning.

There are many things required to be considered when you start making a model track plan. In order to create something that makes your model rail road look realistic, you have to do certain things in the right order. For perfection and success of your model train track, there are some key points that must be kept in mind.

The track layout of model rail road always starts with the first step of planning. This step of planning considers the availability of space with you. The space will decide how track can be laid down on the layout. The logic is, if you begin to create a track that is bigger than the space available, it is obvious that your plan would fail.

The next step to be considered is sketching the track. If your train is super fast, then the best design for the track is a straight path. This helps the trains show its speed to the audience. For small locomotives try curvy tracks that would pass along valleys, mountains etc. Moreover, avoid buying a ready made track as it involves a lot of waste. Readymade tracks usually cannot be customized. In addition to this, after preparing train track model you must test whether train will be able to run properly on the designed tracks or not.

Take each step according to your model train track plan. You can get the best results for your model train layout only after following the plan properly. Building clumsy tracks must be avoided. You may assume that train can easily run on the track designed by you, but in fact, it might not.

Always remember!! Before initiating your plan or buying model train stuff for your model rail road research a lot through websites, eBooks, magazines etc. If you do not want to buy a hard copy of model rail road books, go for eBooks as they would help you save paper and your money, as well. The tips and suggestions provided by experienced and veteran rail road modelers in eBooks prove to be of high value.

Planning a model train track with accuracy and working out on it properly leads your model train layout on a way to success. Do Plan With Perfection. Good Luck!

Which Scale to consider HO or N ?

The most used term, while constructing a model train layout is “scale”. Determining the exact model train layout depends mostly on the scale to be used in a rail road model. Selection of scale also affects of the size of model train stuffs that you need. Sometimes the terms, gauge and scales, are considered same. But they are somewhat different and cannot be interchanged.

Gauge means the breadth between rail heads of the track, while the term scale stands for the ratio of size between the model and realistic layout. Initially there were no scales i.e. any exact measurements. This lack of dimension leads to many confusion and difficulties in building model train layout.

The most important thing in preparing a realistic model train layout is getting the right scales. Before deciding, we need to understand that scale is the reduced form of what the original will look like. There are different scales for different types of model train layout. Scales such as HO, N, Z, O etc are used for model rail road.

Among all the HO scale is the most commonly used scale. The reason behind using HO scale is that, these are the forms of narrow gauge. By narrow gauge, I mean distance between rail tracks is very less. The fairly accurate ratio of HO scale is 1:87. The HO scale is most used by model rail roaders.

HO scale is best suited for big model layouts. This scale is most popular because other scales become too small for large model rail road. The other usually scale considered is N scale. N scale has roughly similar ratio to HO scale i.e. 1: 160.  N scale refers to narrower rail tracks but is very useful for huge rail road models.

Prior to making any decision, it is necessary to know what is needed for your track plan. First know the total space available with you for your entire layout. The HO scale requires more radius than N scale for rail tracks. After proper comparison on a graph paper, you can decide which scale is more suitable for your project.

If your budget is limited, then go for N scale as it requires small model train materials and so is cheaper. While Ho scale, is helpful to those who are not much skillful. As the parts taken, for HO scales are bigger & one can easily set them. N scale requires much expertise and concentration as the elements used are very small.

Moreover, if your layout includes a variety of terrains N scale is better as the size as its rail tracks is less and so can easily pass through various landscapes. While, if you want only one train passing through single scenery go for HO scale. The other scales are much narrow to use in large model train layouts.

The size of your scale depends on your budget, the space available with you, and the model train scenery of your model train layout.

Some Important Model Train Stuff !!

Model train stuffs play a very vital role in construction of a model train layout. Deciding model scenery, planning an exact track, choosing proper scales etc is included in designing model train layout. Developing model train scenery is the most interesting aspect of model train layout.

There are many places where you get “Ready to use” model train  sceneries for your project.

But creating model train scenery of your  own gives you a chance to show your creativity and inventive view. You can get the exact design planned by you. Well, planning a surrounding for your model layout is not too easy and not that difficult too. You just need to decide what kind of landscape you want while keeping in mind the space available for layout.

Model train scenery allows you to create wonderful, realistic view for your layout. It’s not necessary that you plan for big scenery. Youneed to spend many bugs on it. You can even create a beautiful landscape with the help of things that are lying around you in your house. To make your model train layout, look more real. You need to study magazines, eBooks, visit websites etc related to model rail road.

Moreover, you need to observe the landscapes, surrounding, tunnels etc every time you travel. Observing these things would help you a lot in making your practical scenery. Let’s take an example: If you are planning to build a track for logging train, your scenery should include mountains, tunnels etc. city locations should be avoided for it.

First of all you should know how much space is available for your layout. The reason to think for space is that you plan to project big layouts with large sceneries such as setting up a town, mountain area, city station etc. but the space on hand with you is not much. Also, you may construct various sceneries if space is larger, so that they can attract the viewers.

Furthermore, don’t make your track side by side your layout; there should be track turns, track change etc which makes your model rail road more interesting. You can make your model train scenery more appealing by putting rail crossings, grounds and roads. You can make use of following model train materials for model rail road:

Tunnel: when you think of building a mountainous location, you need to find a tunnel that makes the model more realistic. But including a tunnel in your project needs more concentration as carelessness can lead to a crash.

Landscape: think of various landscapes such as riverbeds, mountain, valleys etc. the natural scenes can be most eye catching view for viewers. Developing terrains is the most basic thing to start with your model train layout.

Bridges: you can use bridges to make model train layout more real. The bridges can be made of steel, wood etc.

Other than the above mentioned things you can also think of making waterfalls, trees, sunset scene and much more. You can visit the websites that give tips and recommendations on various model train layouts.
